Where did it all start for me?
At the time we had just moved from New Zealand to Wales, I had a complete lack of energy, hair loss, volatile moods, brain fog, loss of memory (hubby wondered if I had early onset alzheimers!) and I was feeling low and flat. We headed to New Zealand to catch up with family. After about 6 weeks of a "relaxed" vacation one should feel refreshed, revitalised and ready to go - I didn't. I booked a doctor’s appointment, had blood tests and found out my thyroid antibodies were very high and I was on my way to Hashimoto's (an autoimmune condition of the thyroid). My other bloods tests were "normal" and so, typical of the conventional medicine approach, intervention was not considered (for which I am now grateful). It was good to have a diagnosis but I felt overwhelmed with the lack of guidance and support on how to deal with the symptoms I was experiencing - and I did not want to carry on the way I was.
With a young family to look after, I couldn’t stand by while my body struggled to function. Being a food science researcher, I have always had a deep interest in food, nutrition and healthy eating so I began to explore the options. Even though I ate what would be considered healthy, a change in food and lifestyle was required and became my medicine. The backbone of my healing journey was the Auto Immune Protocol (AIP).
I gradually but surely regained my zest for life, and inspired by the changes I experienced, my passion to help others with health issues, particularly autoimmune conditions, was fuelled. I became a certified Holistic Health Coach through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and completed three consecutive courses via Holistic Nutrition Lab; Digestive Intensive, Full Body Systems, and rounding it off by becoming a certified Functional Nutrition & Lifestyle Practitioner.
I’m looking forward to planning a path forward with you during your Thriving with Thyroid call.
